Women Of The Maritime - 2010 Jack Tar Magazine Calendar
Women Of The Maritime - 2010 Jack Tar Magazine Calendar
The calendar is a financial boost to the Jack Tar Magazine mission; We strengthen community among sailors through interactive, informative, and entertaining media, with a focus on the progressive side of modern maritime culture and it's roots in traditional seamanship. The printing of the calendar was made possible thanks to great support we have received to our Kickstarter project. (bit.ly There are huge gaps in how information is being shared between the maritime subcultures today. Heavy industrial offshore and Lakes operations have trade magazines that focus on new technology or environmental legislation affecting their industry. Commercial fishermen, research vessel crew, tour operators and sail training crew have few, if any, forums where they share information. Wooden boat builders, cruisers, and racers have magazines and online forums that include technical articles and product information, but scarce offerings when it comes to well written sea stories, interesting art and photography, and thoughtful reflections about life on the water today. This is where Jack Tar picks up the slack; our audience includes everyone who recognizes the great, and sometimes not-so-great aspects of the seafaring life. We educate new mariners on how to succeed in the maritime industry, while promoting the study of traditional seamanship skills. We provide venues to discuss important issues: whether it's about safety at sea, USCG compliance topics, relationships between operators and ...

African Union and US Officials Emphasize International Effort to Curb Africa's Maritime Security Challenges www.africom.mil Long-term, sustainable approaches at sea and on land backed by international collaboration were consistent themes at the 2010 Maritime Safety and Security Towards Economic Prosperity Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, October 13-14, 2010. "The conference has enabled us to have an in-depth discussion on one of the most important issues facing the world today: How to improve maritime safety and security in order to ensure economic prosperity for all and to have an enhanced dignity for African people, through sustainable governance of Africa's maritime domain," said Ambassador John K. Shinkaiye, the African Union Commission chief of staff, during the conference's closing session. The two-day, international event was sponsored by the US Department of State and Department of Defense. It featured a 15-member delegation from the African Union Commission, headed by HE Erastus Mwencha, the AUC deputy chairperson. More than 170 delegates attended from 19 African and five European nations, along with representatives from international maritime-focused organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector. The conference was hosted by US Africa Command (AFRICOM). "In many important ways, the future of Africa is very much connected with the waters that surround us," Shinkaiye said. BUZZARDS BAY, MA- Mass. Maritime Academy reacts to US captains rescue
BUZZARDS BAY — .The training ship Kennedy sounded a quartet of horn blasts at 2 pm today to celebrate the rescue of Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. The blasts rang across Taylors Point, the Cape Cod Canal and into Buzzards Bay village. Speaking to reporters, MMA Admiral Richard Gurnon repeated his call to arm merchant mariner crews, place soldiers if needed aboard commercial shipping and clean out the pirate havens. This is no difference from the Barbary Wars that Thomas Jefferson had to face, Gurnon said. Gurnon said he had expected the hostage drama that turned into a firefight in the end would play out gradually with negotiations. He said the business model of Somali pirates taking hostages and holding them for ransom must end. We need to change that business model, he said, adding he understands there is shipping- industry opposition to the sentiment of not leaving it to insurance companies to pay for hostage release. We have to remember there are more mariners held hostage out there, the admiral said. We cant walk away from this. We have to put international focus and pressure on the piracy and on Somalia. Gurnon said his campus next to the canal was overjoyed with the release of its 1979 graduate. The good shepherd has been returned to the flock, he said. Good news for Easter. This is a great day for mariners around the world. Gurnon said he remains convinced Phillips will return to sea again ...

The long-range maritime multi-mission CVS401 Perseus weapon system
The official presentation of the long-range maritime multi-mission CVS401 Perseus weapon system takes place today at the Paris Air Show. This system illustrates MBDA's vision for naval combat and land strikes from maritime platforms in 2030 and beyond. Its technical definition was built from MBDA employees' innovative capabilities as expressed through the 169 proposals that were received during the Concept Visions 2011 IDEA Challenge. The CVS401 Perseus weapon system concept is a synthesis of 14 key proposals formulated within the four nations that took part in the Challenge and the focus groups involving French and British operational forces. Assistance was also provided by a network of experts designated from within MBDA's Group Technical Direcorate. If you have the chance to visit the stand at the Paris Air Show or, if not, in the next edition of Vector magazine, you will be able to discover the extraordinary possibilities that the competences of MBDA personnel offer us, along with the portfolio of technologies under development within the group and its industrial partners. The Concept Visions project is a team of nine people, who worked for almost five months to pull together your ideas. "We have examined the 169 proposals one-by-one against an analysis grid based on eleven questions encompassing technical credibility, ambition, originality and operational relevance. At the conclusion of this examination, we selected approximately twenty ideas and then undertook a ...

Erie Days 2011 -- Perseus House and Charter School of Excellence Maritime
For Erie Days 2011 Perseus House and Charter School of Excellence Maritime had two amazing chalk drawings. Leading this project were two teachers from the Charter School of Excellence Maritime and Skills Center. The Maritime students wanted to focus on education and the ship represents the school getting them to their successful education. The Perseus House clients wanted to show that when you do something good for one person they will pass it on to even more people. Both drawings represent our students and clients willingness to do good in the community. Eight students participate in the creating the drawings which took three days.
